William Orbit

Although he's been around since the late 80's , It's a fact that no one really heard of music producer William Orbit before working on madonna's 1998 smash hit album 'Ray of light' which went on to sell more than 4 million in the U.S and over 13 million copies worldwide. Producing records for the likes of Depeche mode , Prince , Seal , All saints , No doubt , Pink , Beth Orton and Blur , William is considered one of the best electronic/alternative producers around and has earned several grammy nominations , most notibly for his solo effort 'Pieces in a modern style'.

I personally never really liked his sounds at first , even when I first listened to madonna's ray of light album , I just hated it and thought it was awful and kept telling all my friends to never buy it ( lol..can you even believe that I actually dissed a madonna record? ) anyways.. that kept on going on 3 or 4 months after the album got released till one day I listened to her song 'the power of goodbye' on the radio and thought , hey thats not bad actually and then decided to give the album another go , and I ended up REALLY loving it , especially for the music production on tracks like 'skin' and 'sky fits heaven' and since then I just fell in love with Orbits sounds and kept on looking out for his work.

I was really pleased in 1999 to find out that All saints had used him to produce their comeback single 'pure shores' which went on to be one of the best selling U.K singles of that year , but the song I really loved off their album 'saints and sinners' released in 2000 and features 4 songs that were produced by Orbit , is the second single 'Black coffee' , to this date I can't seem to get bored of it , the production on it is just brilliant especially the Bridge where Oribit switches to an eastern sound/beat that just sounds amazing , and the ending bit with his weird bleeps and swirls , truely breathtaking for any electronic music fan.

Anyways , My all time fave Orbit produced track has to be U2'S 2003 single 'Electrical Storm'. I just love the production done on this one , and I know that the reason the song sounds so great is cause of orbits work. You probably have to know that the single version is different than the album version which was NOT produced by orbit and does not sound as good as the one orbit produced.

I read that he's producing some new songs for the sugababes's new record , so that should be quite interesting especially cause I'm a fan of theirs and so I'll be looking forward to that. For now , I uploaded my top 3 orbit produced songs for anyone who didnt get the chance to listen to it and wants to know what I'm talking about.

Enjoy. :)

- U2 - Electrical Storm
- All Saints - Black Coffee
- Madonna - Sky fits heaven

Nabz, I disagree with how you imply that producing a song and remixing it are the same thing.

William Orbit was originally a remixer and did get to be a producer till 97 when he did Madonna's Ray of Light and Blur's 13.

I love his remixes for U2 like Electrical Storm but I wouldn't say that he produced the song. He took the original song and added electronic flourishes to it.

You also said he produced songs for Prince. That's not true. Prince has never used an outside producer. He's unique in that every single song he's ever recorded has always been self-produced. I'm not saying this to praise Prince. In fact I really wish he'd use an outside producer for once in his life. He needs a fresh sound.

Muscati , you're absolutely right, I should have been more specific in mentioning which songs he remixed and which ones he actually produced.
