Arabs and Sci/fi - Fantasy ....

I noticed this weird thing about arabs when it comes to sci fi /fantasy movies. They just can't seem to comprehend and accept the idea of watching them and find them to not only be a huge wast of time , but a complete bore for it's lack of realistic elements. I have constantly heard arabs say that they cannot and will not watch movies that have lost their grip of reality.

When star wars came out here , I asked two friends to join me , but they refused totaly and just told me ' it's not realistic enough' , that got me so pissed and I just ended up going to the movies alone , and to my surprise , 80% of the hall was filled by non arabs.

I don't get that , what is the 'magic of cinema' if we continuosly look for movies that basically seem real in every possible way with not a small hint of imagination or creativity in them. If I wanted my movie experience to be 'real' then I'd just switch on the news and get a bucket of pop corn , there's enough drama and action going on in the world already for me to seek it out in movies as well.

I'm not saying that I don't enjoy dramatic or comedy movies , I really do , but I just don't put limits on myself on what I should and shouldn't watch. The fact that many arabs are like this is actually quite disturbing , cause it can effect me as a 'graphic designer' and I somehow fear that it might reach to the extend where I am going to have to customize myself to fit into their limited vision cause they might not welcome any innovative or fresh ideas that they are not familiar with. It is already actually happening to me with my professors asking me to 'stick to the formula' whenever I try to think out of the box.

Anyways.. It is a fact that over all arabs have really bad taste , especially when it comes to movies. Most just go for the sake of 'having some fun' and not actually for the sake of watching the movie itself , which is why in oman we see that when the cinema plays a stupid perverted mindless movie like 'white chicks' the cinema is full and everyone who watched it talks about how 'Brilliant' it is , but when movies like 'Hotel rawanda' get played , barely anyone goes to it cause its too serious for them to tolerate , or when they come out of watching the star wars movies , they talk about how boring it was and that they almost fell asleep during it.

a shame really. oh well.

Its a matter of taste after all.

Myself I didnt watch that movie, because I am not into such movies, I am not saying that I am against these movies, myself I like the movies where the imagination might reach the top.

Anyways, the main reason for not watching that movie because I dont remember watching the 1st two parts, so I avoided watching it at least I came to watch the 1st two part.

Star wars is a bad example to use. I love Fantasy and Sci-fi, but I'm not so much into the Star Wars movies. Foreigners love it because they grew up watching those movies, and when it first came out it had special effects so advanced at that time, that it was regarded as the most beautiful movie.
Forget star wars, Arabs loved Armageddon. We loved the "Harry Potter" and the "Lord of the Rings" movies. You're the one who was complaining about arabs making a big fuss about anime. And anime is all about fantasy :P

lol , oh cummon guys.. You have to admit that it's so often that you hear an arab say , oh I don't wanna watch that movie , its not realistic. I heard it a billion times from different people already.

In jordan no one really liked lord of the rings , nor star wars! I have been pushing a friend to watch the LOTR movies for over a YEAR now and that friend keeps on telling me that its too superficial for her taste.

I wont consider armageddon sci/fi , its more of a drama/action flick really. arabs like those stuff that don't require much usage of their brain cells while watching it. lol

Americans are facinated by the supernatural. At least 1/3 of their television programs are based on their very lively imaginations.A large amount believe in UFO's for pete's sake.

Arabs on the other hand, being very realistic and only believing in what they were raised to believe in, don't have that sort of fantasy with the unknown (or un-existing for that matter).

I think the problem with Arab people is that they don't understand the directors' vision for a movie. They don't see the beauty in the making of something because they hardly watch any movies albiet those comedies they're used to. They're vision of movies is purely entertainment, which explains why they don't feel (or go to) a movie like Hotel Rawanda.

Its the same thing with music sometimes isn't it? Everyone is going for the hip hop R&B funky stuff but no one will find beauty to a song that is pure genuis.

People are like that in general, its not just Arabs :p

I am one of the people who say that stars wars is too unrealistic for me. I am simply not into it.
I appreciate imagination and all , but not where it is over the top (Star Wars).
I watch non-fiction , like "Hotel Rowanda" , is a perfect movie outing for me. So I am the type who appreciates good movies.
but it has to be within my realistic limitations.

:D
Cheers
