Dotmusic.com :
Music copied on to recordable CDs is becoming a bigger threat to the bottom line of record stores and music labels than online file-sharing, the head of the US recording industry's trade group says.
"Burned" CDs accounted for 29% of all recorded music obtained by fans in 2004, compared with 16% attributed to downloads from online file-sharing networks, Mitch Bainwol, chief executive for the Recording Industry Association of America, said.
The data, compiled by the market research firm NPD Group, suggested that about half of all recordings obtained by music fans in 2004 were due to authorised CD sales and about 4% from paid music downloads.
"CD burning is a problem that is really undermining sales," Bainwol said in an interview, before speaking to about 750 members of the National Association of Recording Merchandisers in San Diego on Friday.
Copy protection technology "is an answer to the problem that clearly the marketplace is going to see more of", he added.
Album sales in the US are down about 7% this year compared with a year ago, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Yet the recording industry has seen a lift from online music sales, which when factored in with album and sales of CD singles increased overall music sales through July to 21% over last year.
After experimenting with copy-protected CDs in Europe and Latin America in recent years, some record labels have begun releasing albums in North America with similar copy restrictions.
The CDs typically allow users to burn no more than a handful of copies.

It honestly makes me laugh to read about these 'copy-protected' CDs cause I was able to Extract songs from every single so called protected CD I bought in the past using some of the most simplest softaware which is available all over the net. so these record companies should just stop thinking that this is actually helping and probably should think of reducing the price of music.
However It does make alot of sense that Copied Cds are more of a threat to the music industry than file sharing over the net , cause lets face it , whenever we buy an Original music Cd our friends come and ask us to copy it for them and being the good friends we are we actually do that for them and with pleasure cause cummon.. who wants to spend around 5.5 Rials on every single music album they really like? I myself copied alot of my original CDs for friends and family and they never ended up buying the real thing even when they really loved the album.
Speaking of Original CDs , I have to point out that I have not bought a single original CD since September of 2003 , simply because music is just over priced in Jordan ( around 8 rials per CD ) , But I will buy Madonna's album once it's out in November of this year , I'm quite excited about that , not cause it's madonna , but cause I really forgot what it's like to buy the real thing with the booklete in it , and being able to read the song credits and all that , I really missed that.

I can be one of both. Myself I enjoy buying my music. But, sometimes you just feel that you can make it easy by getting these tracks & burn them, or copy them from another CD.
Tonight I went to this shop where I do always get my CDs from, I went to check my order which has been there since ages, & they still didnt get the album yet! DUH!
Anyways, I ended up buying a Richard Marx album "My Own Best Enemy", even though Staind'a album "Chapter V" was there.
All the time I was looking for this album of the guitar player Jesse Cook, its called "Vertigo". Its all amazing! I wanted to order the album, even its that old. But, I got the chance days back to find all the tracks using a P2P software, so now I can just enjoy Sting's well known old hit "Frangle" played by Jesse Cook featuring the voice of Holly Cole, you should check it out!!
I know, I talk alot, just wanted to express this!
If the tool is there & the cash is there, so then enjoy burning & buying! :D
haven't been buying any albums for a very long time... I simply download them and my brother saves them into his Ipod... what more would anyone want? why bother buying them when everything's available online? hehe... I can see their problem :D
btw... aside from NF's post... whatever's after it made absolutely no sense... anythin to do with spamming or useless comments?
lol tee..yeah those were crappy spams , I kept them cause i linked to them in my spam attack post so that people can see what I'm talking about.
regarding downloading music , it's never the same as buying the real thing. If u're a true music fan you'll always want the real cd in your hands , it's just a magical experience ( well for me at least) :p . I can't wait for madonna's new cd to be out.
